We realized in the midst of a crisis a while back that our customers really wanted a whole lot more data than we were giving them and that we needed to build a tool that would allow us to communicate more effectively with them.

Blogs work so well for providing archived information over time, so we actually created the whole thing as a Wordpress theme with a couple of plugins that make the dashboard happen. One of our in-house coders put the email and Twitter part together and it hangs off the back where it simply parses the RSS feeds that Wordpress outputs.

We've always offered email subscriptions for updates, so that was something we were used to providing. Twitter is new (and well received much to my surprise - I didn't expect to see as many customers on Twitter as we have). Overall, it's been well received.

Email me at james at opensrs dot com if you want more information.

James, something that would be extremely useful to...

James, something that would be extremely useful to me (and other readers) is any kind of data or feedback you've collected on the benefits of having a public health dashboard. I love the way you've met pretty much every rule above, covering a fairly large number of specific services, while still making it really easy to get the information you need. Not to mention that I don't know of any other dashboard that lets anyone be alerted of status changes. How long have you had your system status page up at this point?

Hey Lenny,Superb post with tons of great informati...

Hey Lenny,

Superb post with tons of great information.
